Introducing Rockstar Apparel: Embodying Eclectic Style and Uniqueness

You can’t talk about South African fashion brands and leave Rockstar apparel out. Johannesburg-born and raised local designer, Tyrick George, describes his brand as eclectic and we certainly see this embodied in the clothing. With items inspired by modern, vintage, and futuristic Rockstars the designs are bound to make you feel as cool as one. Every piece has been touched by the designer himself from start to finish, unlike commercially mass-produced designer wear. The brand draws inspiration from all sorts of avenues and carefully curates it to fit the brand’s aesthetics much like the founder’s belief – that ‘’adaptation is necessary in order to succeed”. African fashion continues to grow with collaborations from different industries such as sport and hip hop and South African fashion has grown exponentially with a diverse pool of brands that have put South African fashion on the map – Rockstar apparel aspires to do the same: To be a staple in the local streetwear scene. With the goal of dropping consistently, the brand aims to command loyalty in this way making it a highly coveted streetwear brand.

Tyrick George: From Graphic Tees to Fashion Design Passion

From a young age, Tyrick had been intrigued by the idea of printing graphic tees on his own t-shirts. Being fortunate enough to have computer literacy – he used paint to create graphics which he would then download and print out what he had painted on the computer onto a t-shirt. Tyrick was later introduced to photoshop by his neighbour who was a cartoonist for the Sun newspaper. Having the skill of creating visual content, it was assumed by everyone around him that he wanted to become a graphic designer, he too believed the same and later discovered his passion for fashion design. Being a Kanye West fan introduced him to a lot of designers such as Virgil Abloh. Abloh’s brand Off-White showcased that these two designs worlds could merge into a successful streetwear brand like Off-White.

For the longest time, African street fashion was heavily influenced by American fashion. Although throughout the years the general South African fashion scene has continued to grow exponentially with an infinite pool of marvellous local designers that have embraced its locality. The local fashion scene has grown to accommodate many different clothing styles, this is how local streetwear brands have gained success. Rockstar apparel will only add to the success of African fashion with its unique designs inspired by all sorts of things life has to offer.

For instance, Evol this line draws inspiration from the fact that good cannot coexist without bad as the word ‘’Evol’’ is actually love spelt backwards. This coincides with the angel phone piece where the buttons are angel numbers so one can call upon them in times of Evol. As the lead designer, Tyrick can take more risks and design freely from drafting patterns; to sewing the materials together and eventually creating a wearable masterpiece. The goal for the next few years is to produce more items and have them sell out as consistently as they are produced.
